Edmond Welcomes New Ward One City Council Member

Edmond, OK—December 13, 2024—In a ceremony filled with tradition and gratitude, Edmond officially welcomed Maggie Cole Murdoch Nichols as the new Ward One City Council Member. The swearing-in event, held at City Hall, was attended by council members, city staff, friends, and family who gathered to mark this important milestone.

The ceremony commenced with the presentation of colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation led by Pastor Mlon. The pastor’s heartfelt prayer expressed thanks for the freedoms provided by the country, the service of government officials, and specifically acknowledged Maggie’s readiness to serve Edmond. Mayor Davis and other city officials were also recognized for their dedication to the community.

Judge Slayton administered the oath of office, and Nichols, joined by her family, solemnly pledged to uphold the Constitution of the United States, the Oklahoma Constitution, and the Edmond City Charter. She also committed to faithfully discharge her duties as a City Council Member and trustee of the Edmond Public Works Authority.

Nichols delivered a touching acceptance speech, thanking her fellow council members for appointing her, the city staff for their professionalism, and her family and friends for their unwavering support. She expressed her commitment to serving Ward One, which she described as a unique and historically rich part of Edmond. She highlighted its vibrant downtown, the University of Central Oklahoma, Title I schools, and various nonprofits that serve the community.

“It is my hope that when my daughters are grown and choosing where they want to live, Edmond will be a place they consider,” Nichols said. She emphasized her dedication to leading with wisdom, collaboration, and openness while fostering the growth and well-being of the community.

Fellow council members welcomed Nichols warmly, praising her extensive experience, including her work on the Community Action Review Committee, her leadership roles in the city, and her perspective as a young business owner and mother. “With a young family, I think you bring a lot of wisdom and experience that is unique to the council,” one council member remarked.

The ceremony concluded with a festive tone as Nichols’ children joined her for a photo opportunity, marking a historic and joyous moment for Edmond. Attendees were invited to celebrate with refreshments and camaraderie.
