Edmond NEWS: Edmond Advances Intelligent Transportation System with Phase IV Funding

In a major step toward improving traffic flow and safety, the City of Edmond has secured federal funding to expand its Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) in Phase IV. At a recent city council meeting, Steve Lawrence, Director of Engineering, provided an in-depth overview of the program and how it will revolutionize traffic management across Edmond.

The ITS primarily focuses on upgrading traffic signals throughout the city. Real-time communication between traffic signals and the Traffic Management Center allows city engineers to make instant adjustments, improving traffic flow and reducing delays. According to Lawrence, these upgrades will make a significant difference during peak traffic hours, special events, and emergencies.

A key feature of the system is the installation of real-time video at intersections. This technology not only provides live footage of traffic conditions but also assists in the analysis of crashes, helping the city improve safety measures at accident-prone intersections. "We're able to use the video of crashes to determine how they were caused and make safety improvements," Lawrence said. Additionally, this video technology allows the Traffic Management Center to adjust signals to keep traffic moving smoothly during incidents, including emergency responses and construction work zones.

Edmond’s ITS also enhances traffic control for emergency vehicles, particularly fire trucks, by giving them signal priority. This ensures that fire trucks can navigate intersections quickly and safely, minimizing response times. Lawrence mentioned future improvements with GPS technology, which would allow for even faster and more efficient signal prioritization.

Special events in Edmond, such as soccer tournaments at the Edmond Soccer Club and the Liberty Fest fireworks, benefit greatly from the ITS. The system helps control traffic in real-time, allowing vehicles to enter and exit parking areas more efficiently. Lawrence pointed out that after this year’s Liberty Fest fireworks, traffic cleared in record time, thanks to the team monitoring signals from the Traffic Management Center.

Phase IV of the ITS project has now been fully funded, with the city securing an additional $2.7 million in federal funds. This brings the total federal contribution to $10.2 million, with construction expected to begin this fall or early spring. The project will expand signal coverage to 65% of Edmond’s intersections, with full completion anticipated in about 18 months.
